Donald Monro is Emeritus Professor of Information Systems at the University of Bath, England, where has held a chair since 1991. After taking a Masters degree at the University of Toronto, he worked in the aeronautical industry before moving to the UK to study for the PhD degree at Imperial College, London (ICL). Since then, Prof Monro has made his career in academic research and teaching, becoming Senior Lecturer in the Department of Computing at ICL, before moving to Bath in 1991.

A long interest in digital information systems brought him early inventions in the fields of laser printing and fingerprint recognition. He is an acknowledged expert in wavelet transforms, and has many patents in methods of digital video and audio compression, as well as current research interests in more general aspects of signal and image processing. Since late 2003, Prof Monro has been applying his expertise in image processing and pattern recognition to iris biometrics and issues related to improving the real-world performance of this particular facet of auto identification technology.
